Prof.R.K.Verma honoured with Basant Sammaan for the year 2005 |

Born on 16th May 1928 Prof. R.K.Verma completed post graduation in physics in the year 1950, and went to Harvard University, USA where he obtained a doctorate in Geophysics in 1957. After
returning to India, he served Oil and Natural Gas Commission for two years and then joined the National Geophysical Research Institute in 1961 and served the organization with distinction up to 1969.
He joined Indian School of Mines same year and taught several generations of students, many of whom have shown their mettle in the field of academics and research in India and abroad. Prof. Verma retired as a Professor
in 1988. Under his patronage 22 students completed their doctoral research. Prof. Verma authored two books and has over 250 national and international research publications to his credit. He is the recipient of
M.S.Krishnan gold medal awarded by the Indian Geophysical Union, and served the University of Delhi as Emeritus Professor.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of Geophysics and for shaping up the destiny of several generations of students at Indian School of Mines, the ISM Alumni Association is privileged to honour Prof.R.K.Verma with Basant Samman for the year 2005. |

Prof.D.Chandra honoured with Basant Sammaan for the year 2005 |

Born on 14th July 1929, Prof.D.Chandra obtained the degree of Master of Science in Geology from Calcutta University in the year 1950. For pursuing higher studies, he went to the University of London
(U.K), where he earned the degree of Ph.D. in Geology, in the year 1957.He served the British Coal Utilization Research Association as a scintific officer initially, and subsequently the National Coal Board, U.K.,
as a scientist, for twelve years and represented U.K. in the International Committee for Coal Petrology. On returning back to India, he joined the Department of Applied Geology, Indian School of Mines, served the Department with
distinction for about quarter of a century, and then retired as a Professor in 1989. He was Emeritus Scientist(CSIR) in Calcutta University from 1990 to 1995. He has to his credit
115 National and International publications in seven languages. He has made a significant contribution towards popularization of science among children, and the Government of West Bengal honoured him with Satyen Puraskar for his laudable efforts in this direction. He has authored more than 30 books in English and Bengali. He was the
recipient of Senior Coal Scientist's Award and National Mineral Award from the Government of India. He guided a record 29 number of Ph.D. scholars, during his distinguished career. He took a very Keen interest in creating awareness among the young about the different sources of energy.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the subject of Geology, and his dedicated service to Indian School of Mines, the ISM Alumni Association is privileged to honour Prof.D.Chandra with Basant Samman for the year 2005. |

Sad demise of Shri Bhaskar Bhattacharya |

Director General of Mines (Safety) Bhaskar Bhattacharya and his
son drowned in the Bay of Bengal in Andaman on 27th October 2006.
Mr. Bhattacharya along with his son Siddharth and wife went to
the famous Radhanagar sea beach in Havlock island for taking a
bath when the deceased fell down after being hit by a strong
wave, sustaining severe injuries. They were rushed to hospital,
where they were declared brought dead. He is survived by one son and
wife. Mr. Bhattacharya, who joined as
Deputy Director of Mines (Safety) in Dhanbad way back in 1981,
rose to the post of Deputy Director General of Mines (Safety) in
Nagpur. In the year 2004, he became
Director General of Mines (Safety) in Dhanbad and was due to
retire in 2011. He did his B-Tech in
Mining Engg. from ISM, Dhanbad. He was also the President of ISMAA. |

1st March 2005 New and improved ISMAA site launched |
| |
| The new and improved ISMAA site was
inaugurated on the Basant day, 27th Feb. 2005 and was made
available online from 1st March. The new site offers loads of
power packed features, which the registered users can enjoy.
Some of the facilities offered by this site includes - an
advanced message board (with provisions to start an altogether
new discussion of yours, a comprehensive search engine (which
requires the least of information) and a personal mailing
system. Registrations are open for all current (final year and
pre-final years) and ex-students of ISM. In case your batch
details are not available on this site, please inform us about

27th February 2005 ISM celebrates Basant 2005. |

|
Basant, the annual alumni
reunion was celebrated with great fervor and
enthusiasm on 27th February, 2005 in the
glorious campus of ISM.
The day started off with BASANT
SPORTS, an informal event for the alumni and
students, where they get together and relive those
ecstatic moments they had once experienced. Sports
were followed by a working lunch for the alumni,
guests and committee members. Registration at the
reunion started at around 2.30 p.m. at the
institute’s lower ground with over 200 alumni
registering on the day.
